A letter from Karlijn van den Broek
I come from the Netherlands (close to Germany) where I have finished high school and pre-university (Arts). Before I go to university I wanted to do some useful volunteer work and see the world. That’s why I choose to go to India and teach English at a primary school.
I really liked Kanajar because it is a small village where you can really discover the Indian nature and culture. In the Netherlands, I’ve lived in a big city so it was quite different to live in a small village like Kanajar. I also noticed that people in smaller villages are less used to see people from abroad. Therefore, communicating in English with the people was quite difficult. It’s a pity because I wanted to ask so many things and speak with a lot of people. But, after a few weeks I got really good in communicating with my hands and simple English sentences.
The food in India is quite different from the food I eat in the Netherlands. We eat a lot of potatoes and we don’t eat as much rice. I really like the Indian food though; it’s much healthier than the food I usually eat. Although, sometimes, it is a bit too spicy for me, since I’m not used to the spicy food.
In summary, I’ve had a great time in Kanajar.
Thank you all!
